From getting let go from a junior role through to managing a team of intern software engineers, I have been in tech for 9 years studying computing at both college and university, and eventually finding my feet in the tech world as a junior software engineer at Covéa Insurance, mentoring and managing a team of tech interns and apprentices.
It took a number of years and roles to start to feel confident about tech. During this time I have been welcomed into the Leeds tech community: from co-hosting Leeds Frontend meetup, voluntarily instructing at Code First Girls as well as other tech community events. Covéa has supported my development and leadership ambitions, as well as placing me at college to study a Level 3 - Leadership course.
I started my adventure with IT when I was 9 on my first computer, an Atari 800XT…
Started work as IT Support Technician in London. Progressed to working on projects in various IT areas - networking, datacentres, databases, business intelligence and development.
2014 - joined Diversity Travel as Information System Development Manager. 5 days later, Head of IT decided to leave and I was offered the job!
Over the last 6 years we have grown the team from 3 to 30, released hotel and flight booking tools for clients catering for the specific needs of the academic and charity sectors.
4 years ago, I joined the Board of Directors. My role now focuses on strategy and commercial aspects of the business, working with multi-cultural and geographically distributed teams. Building excellent relationships with them and with stakeholders is very important to me. We try not to be precious of our code and the tools we've built and have a culture of continuous improvement.
