Market Statistics
Through 2023, systems roles were slowly increasing as a percentage of the IT market. Numbers are similar to previous years, going against the trend for the wider IT market during 2023.
In the last few months we’ve seen numbers continue to increase, especially in contract roles. Contract roles across the board took a downturn in 2023 but there are signs this is turning around in 2024.
Coming into 2024, we expect the market to improve as companies kick off new change, modernisation, and transformation projects.
Salary / Rates Information
Over the last 6 months salaries for Systems Engineer and Administrator roles have increased by just over 2%.
This takes the average wage for all Systems Engineer and Admin roles to £43k. For more junior roles, the median is closer to £28k, and senior roles can expect salaries to be around an average of £55k.
For contract roles, rate increases are slightly larger with average rate rises of about 3.6% over the last 6 months. The median rate for systems roles across the board is £430/day.
We expect salaries and rates to rise slightly, alongside an increase in roles moving forward into 2024.
Hybrid Working
Fully remote roles are few and far between for Systems Engineer/Admin roles. The standard is hybrid, though some businesses are expecting full time on site. This will, of course, depend on the requirements for the role.
When a role is hybrid, the vast majority of positions expect 2/3 days a week on site, though some are expecting 4 days on site. Hybrid roles with 1 day a week on site or less are even less frequent.
Top Locations
Manchester and the North West are hotspots for Systems Engineer and Administrator roles in the North. The North continues to grow as a big part of the UK’s tech sector.
